Anxiety & Stress

Anxiety and stress

Presenting in the form of consistent worrying and stress, anxiety is a common condition that can be quite distressing and can have an impact on your day-to-day life. It affects roughly 14% of Australian people and is more common in women.  One person can experience more than one type of anxiety disorder at a time, also suffering with depression or issues with addictive behaviours.

Symptoms:

Anxiety disorder can be incredibly debilitating, causing distress and uncertainty, and at times, for seemingly no apparent reason. A person may experience symptoms such as:

  • Excessive or unrealistic worries or fears (generalised anxiety disorder)

  • Compulsions and obsessive behaviours (obsessive compulsive disorder)

  • Persistent and excessive concern and worry in social situations (social anxiety disorder)

  • Panic attacks (panic disorder)

  • Irrational fears of common, daily things and/or situations (phobias)

Physical symptoms may also present with those who suffer from anxiety disorders for example, stomach pains, tension in the muscles, sweating, heart pounding and shakiness, among others.

Cause:

Unfortunately, the underlying cause of anxiety disorders can vary from person to person, and several factors can contribute, therefore there is no one way of knowing an exact causation.
